When we rolled out Love Food Hate Waste training in 10 cities, we wanted to include people from all communities, so we worked with the The Indian Community Centre on Clifton St, Belfast through Volunteer Now Enterprises LTD.

 

The centre is a voluntary organisation that encourages people to learn about all aspects of Indian culture. Its community development and outreach programmes promote integration with the wider community. It offers talks on Indian food, culture, heritage, values and spirituality. They also offer sessions in Indian dance, performance and henna demonstrations.

The Love Food Hate Waste training gave attendees the opportunity to incorporate food saving measures and tips as part of their activities.

Freezing food
As a vegetarian community, the participants were keen to hear about freezing vegetables and rice to save money.

Loving leftovers
There were lots of discussion on using leftovers – great ideas for recipes were shared with lots of new ideas on how to store food effectively. In particular, participants learned how to tell if an egg was still fresh.

Perfect planning
The group agreed to check their cupboards before shopping, so they would not be tempted to buy food they didn’t need.

The event was informative and practical – we presented the key facts and then got the group to do practical exercises. Lots of discussion followed and continued over the delicious lunch organised by Volunteer Now.

The seventeen attendees felt they had learned a lot. They were keen to implement what they’d discovered and share the information with their community. People felt they went away with some very useful tips.
