Whether it’s the last few slices bread or the pasta that was cooked for two but could have fed four! Small amounts of food thrown away regularly soon adds up and is costing UK families £50 per month.
A Gornal woman has proved she has stars in her pies by securing over 100 votes to win the Pie Factor competition launched earlier this year across the Black Country.
Nicola Hickman from Lower Gornal won the contest with her ‘Kick Ass Chicken, Cheese and Chilli Pie’.
The short-listed recipes were available at all of the Mad O’Rourke outlets for two weeks and pie lovers were invited to try them and vote for their favourite one.
The finalists were Rachel Huskisson from Wolverhampton with her Grorty Pudding Pie, Amy Williams from Tipton with Amy's Spicy beef pie, 12-year-old Darcy Laceby from Wolverhampton with her BBQ Pork Pie and winner Nicola Hickman from Lower Gornal with her Kick Ass Chicken, Cheese and Chilli Pie,
Nicola has now won a place on a cookery course for two with top London chef Theo Randall
Part of the Black Country’s Love Food Hate Waste Campaign, the contest has been organised to encourage people to think creatively about the ingredients they use and help them reduce the amount of good food that gets unnecessarily thrown away. Families in the Black Country could save up to £50 a month simply by making the most of the food they buy.
