Our tips for Milk

  • Off milk

    Submitted by Rachel, New Zealand

“Off” milk makes the best scones! Don’t toss iffy milk, but rather whip up a batch of scones, or freeze it in scone-sized portions until you’re ready to use it. Rotten milk makes scones much fluffier and tastier then regular – you’ll be amazed!

  • Yoghurt for cakes and scones

Submitted by Caroline Marson, Cookery Advisor,

Add any leftover yoghurt to a cake or scone mixture instead of milk.

  • Freezing milk

    Submitted by Ilaria, Paris

I regularly freeze semi-skimmed milk - fresh or long life - e.g. when we have half finished bottles or bought too much and we are off for a few days. It also means that we can have our much needed cup of tea when we get back to an otherwise empty fridge, whatever the time of day or night!

  • The wonders of fromage frais

    Submitted by Pat Phillips ,

You can use fromage frais instead of butter and milk in mashed potato, then use the remainder to thicken curry, or use with little artificial sweetner and vanilla essence instead of cream on fresh fruit desserts.

  • Breakfast bananas

    Submitted by Hannah Wood, Ipswich

Slice an over ripe banana and blend with milk until smooth. Pour over cereal such as weetabix or muesli for a healthy breakfast. It's a great choice for before a workout! Also works well if you mix in other soft fruit that is about to go off - such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries . It uses up old fruit, adds more taste to the cereal, plus the different colours the milk ends up amuses my kids no end!

  • Freeze your milk

    Submitted by Eva Harrington, Surrey

I often freeze milk (in unopened plastic cartons), particularly when I am going on holiday and have a couple of unused cartons going to waste. It doesn't seem to make any difference to it, my mum has been doing it for years.

  • Freezing milk

    Submitted by David Wall, Shaftesbury

Buy semi-skimmed, or skimmd milk. Then before going away, you can freeze your milk ready for when you come home. Whole milk doesn't freeze well.
