Make lollies from leftover smoothies, apple juice or orange juice. You can buy plastic lolly making moulds to use in the freezer.
If you have a few odd pieces of fruit which need eating up, slice them into the correct number of bowls for your little pirates and smother in freshly made custard (instant, tin or carton will do, but work out more expensive and it's easier to get a specific amount if you make it up yourself). My children love hunting for the buried treasure so much that they told me I should sell the recipe! You can easily adapt this idea with a few sweets, chocolate buttons or whatever else you have to hand...
Store oranges in the fridge. Oranges keep their freshness and quality for much longer than those stored at room temperature, and keeping them in the fridge in a loosely tied plastic bag will also help stop them shriveling up. Add to the fruit bowl to bring to room temperature to taste their true Mediterranean sweetness.
Oranges stay fresh and firm for even longer in the fridge if kept in a loosely tied plastic bag.
Chop up and mix the orange with some onion (red or spring work best), some tomatoes, sweetcorn and raisins. Add some olive oil and a spoon of pickles or chutney. It goes great with pork or turkey.
Oranges taste great in salads and give them a nice sweetness.
A great way of getting children to have their daily fruit portion and of using up leftover fruit is to invest in a smoothie maker. These make great breakfast and snack options
I hate to throw away food but with young children it’s sometimes difficult to avoid. If food remains uneaten, I will try to think of another use. Just yesterday I had quartered some oranges for Harry and Rose and a few segments were left over. I put them in the fridge and then for supper I par-boiled some beetroot before roasting this with the orange segments and juice– the sweet but citrus tang of the oranges combines beautifully with the beetroot and cuts through its sometimes ‘earthy’ taste.
