Our tips for chillies

  • Cheap and healthy batch cooking

    Submitted by Gemma Parnell, Bedfordshire

Bulk up meals like pasta bakes, curry and chilli con carne with beans, pulses vegetables and potatoes. It's cheaper healthier and it means you can use up the rest of the vegetables in the fridge! I always make at least one extra portion to freeze when cooking, and I make food for my baby at the same time.

  • Freeze your thin chillies

    Submitted by Bal, London

Few manage to use up all those chillies in the supermarket packets so....freeze them whole and just take out of the freezer what ever you need and chop whilst they are still frozen. First length ways and then thinly slice. They are much easier to chop whilst frozen. No more dried out chilli pods languishing in your fridge.

  • Whole fresh chillies

    Submitted by Jackie Forrest, Holbeach

You usually need to buy a whole pack of those hot red chillies even though you may only need one chilli. Deseed the chillies and chop finely, then add the same number of crushed garlic cloves. Pop in a plastic bag then in a plastic airtight container and freeze. Spoon out a small quantity as required.

  • Freezing Chillies

    Submitted by Alice, Ireland

We freeze our chillies whole, wrapped in cling film. Whenever we want to use one, we pull it out and grate as much as we want while it's still frozen. It's even easier than chopping up a fresh or thawed one!
