Inspirational site, with wonderful ideas. My family and I are now enthused with excellent ideas for saving on food waste with its financial and environmental savings. We will channel the gains into fund raising activities and create bigger benefits for all. It's also a great way to get the children learning about clever habits for their fast approaching step into independence. Close

Use your scales to weigh dry pasta to get the right amount for your family. My husband and I each eat 3oz and the children used to have an oz each but my son is getting bigger so he now has 2. By weighing the past I know I always cook the right amount. Works for any shape including spaghetti too. And you can do the same with rice!
Grow your own vegetables
Submitted by Kay, Essex
By growing your own veg you will be saving money and enjoying a fresher taste. If you have too much left over, makes soups or blanche veg and freeze to enjoy over the winter. Or give some away to friends. They will think you are very clever, and hopefully encourage them to grow their own as well. If you don't have much ground space for growing veg, use boxes. I did and had great sucess. Good luck!
Juicy lemon

When you need the juice from a lemon, microwave first on high for about 10 seconds and you get far more juice from it.
Keeping Flour
Submitted by Beverley, Huddersfield
When I get home with a new bag of flour, I enclose it in a tightly closed plastic bag (a freezer clip, twist tie, or a clothes peg work well). I then place in the freezing compartment of the fridge for 24 hours. When it is removed, leave the tightly closing plastic bag in place. The cold kills any flour mites and the plastic bag protects the flour from damp etc. You will never have to discard flour again!
Wash Them
Submitted by Lia, Alaska
I soak & wash all my fruits and vegetables in a sink full of water with just a drop of Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds (I've heard that salt & vinegar work just as well). Veggies I've washed this way are often still quite good 1 - 2 weeks later. Even cauliflower lasted 5 days with no spoiling at all. When I don't soak them, they spoil a lot faster.
