File 445An estimated one million tonnes of breakfast food - worth almost £2 billion – is thrown away every year from our homes! This includes 2 million loaves every single day!

Sunday sees the start of Farmhouse Breakfast week, an annual celebration championing the importance of breakfast which aims to get the nation to Shake Up Their Wake Up!  47% of people regularly skip breakfast during the week so their aim is to encourage people to enjoy a healthy breakfast more regularly.

File 531Farmhouse Breakfast Week is run on behalf of arable farmers who grow crops such as wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape.  The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the wealth of wonderful breakfast produce available around the country.

All stages of the food chain, from farmers to food producers and retailers to consumers are encouraged to get involved and hold events to promote the importance of starting the day with breakfast.  Activities include tasting sessions, breakfast competitions, cookery demonstrations, special breakfast menus and school breakfast clubs to name just a few.

File 463Don't forget once your cereal pack is open to store it in a good quality airtight container or re-close the cereal bag with a food clip to stop it going soft. If you forget and have a few stale crumbs add it to a bread or biscuit mix for added crunch once cooked. And don't forget you can toast from frozen - so avoiding throwing away the last of bread because it's gone mouldy.
