Celebrate Apple Day this Sunday by making the most of your apples

File 165Sunday sees the UK's annual Apple Day - a day to celebrate the wealth and variety of apples available in the United Kingdom.

We waste around 4 million apples every single day and yet we have some of the best apples in the world on our doorsteps. Simply remembering to keep our apples in the fridge in a bag, and knowing what we can do to rescue the wrinkly ones can save us pounds on our shopping.

The day was first started in 1990 by Common Ground in Covent Garden. By 2000 the day was celebrated in over 600 events around the country, and abroad! Events are organised by restaurants, museums, Women's Institutes, cider makers, community orchards and garden societies, to name but a few. Why not visit an orchard or try your hand at making cider this Sunday?

Alternatively check out that fruit bowl and get cooking:

  1. File 296Fruit bowl buns - 2 grated apples and bingo - tasty fruit buns!
  2. Baked apples - simple to prepare and is ideal for using up any apples that are past their best
  3. Make your own dried apple slices - Peel, core then cut into slim slices. Spread the fruit onto a baking try and place in a low oven 100°C or the lowest mark for 45 minutes. Allow to cool before storing in airtight containers. Great for topping onto yoghurts, cereals and stirring into porridge.
  4. Apple Spice Muffins - if you don't have any apples left try apricots, dried cranberries, banana or dried blueberries.
  5. Fennel, apple and smoked trout salad with Tzatziki - fresh, tasty and perfect for waking up the tastebuds.

The UK has some amazing varieties of apple, and they're in season right now. Ever tried a Red Pippin? Lord Lamborne? Worcester Pearmain?

Make the most of your apples this weekend - I will be!

we get loads of apples from my partner's parents apple tree so it's always good to find new recipes!

I like half an apple chopped up and cooked in with my porridge first thing in the morning.
