As a member of the older generation I was always encouraged to waste not want not. Leftovers are always 'recycled' into new dishes and vegetables past their best become soup assisted by stock made with almost free bones (ie chicken carcasses). If more of us learnt to cook instead of living on take-outs and the like there would be a lot less waste in the world. Food is expensive, why waste it?
