I think the new "cookery lessons" the govt wants schools to teach children should include how to plan what what they'd like to eat for the week and then how to buy only what's needed - this could also include how to use up leftovers in an imaginative and tasty way. Perhaps many food shoppers just purchase on impulse, without planning meals, and so end up with a glut of food that expires before they can eat it.
