We keep four ex-battery hens in our garden as family pets. Food waste is minimised at a stroke as they love to eat scraps! And we can even recycle their egg shells as if you crush them and feed them back to them it ensures hard shells. Hens are the ultimate green pets and I heartily recommend them to everyone. Fun too.
