Check your fridge and cupboards, check your cookbooks and plan meals for the week ahead before you go shopping. You're less likely to buy things on impulse that you don't use. Realise that you can get several meals from one item - a bbq chicken can make pasta and salad and you can use the bones for soup or stock. Mince meat can be used for bolognese, cottage pie, hamburgers. Learn when things smell off - just because something is out of date, doesn't mean it can't be used, check it and see.
