My mother, a young housewife during the war, was so used to making food go as far as possible that we were brought up to think that wasting food was almost sinful. I'm not saying that I never throw anything out but we love homemade soup from the remains of the joint and veggies after Sunday and what could be better that bubble and squeak topped with an egg? Indulgent and guilt free all at the same time!
