I plan the family meals for the week ahead so that I only buy what I need. My shopping bill is lower than those of many of my friends even though we buy similar things. The difficulty is avoiding the special deals; buy one get one free, two for a pound etc. If I take advantage of these deals I try to get items that don't perish quickly (dried or frozen goods) or have extended 'use by' dates so that I can use the things that I have bought, otherwise the special offer turns out to be a false economy.
