The hatred of wasted food was instilled in me by my good Scots mum, who always had a pan of soup on the stove, using up leftover veg and making the most of stock. I'll admit to losing some of this ethos while at university and living on my own, but now I'm married with a small child (and less money coming in!) I'm remembering all those thrifty ways. The most effective way to prevent leftovers is to plan food, and this is what I do every week when my organic veg box arrives. I shop according to what we need and we have very little waste (apart from what my nearly two year old throws on the floor!) What is leftover is put into our local council food waste recycling bin, where it is turned into compost in special machines.
