I try to build many of the waste prevention campaign messages into my children’s cookery demonstration. I suggest to children that fresh (real) food is better for them but that they should buy small quantities locally, thereby supporting small farmers, other food producers and the local community. This way we can save on food miles and conserve energy. The buy-one-get-one-free supermarket offers so often stay in the store cupboard or end up in the dustbin as the best-by date passes. Everyone likes a bargain but so often when we shop the idea of a ‘bargain’ takes over from our planned shopping list. However, food isn’t a bargain if an unopened packet ends up in the landfill and adds to the methane load - so storing up problems for future generations.
