Amber Valley Borough Council are proud to support WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign because it is important to highlight the large amount of food waste that is unnecessarily disposed of. A large proportion of this food waste ends up being taken to landfill sites, where as it rots it releases environmentally damaging methane, as well as adding to a polluting leachate that has the potential to pollute water courses and the surrounding countryside. With a few simple changes to our shopping and cooking habits most of this unwanted waste can be prevented. The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is tackling this important issue and it should be commended for that.

We hope that everyone who visits this site will find helpful information and urge them to look at out website www.recap.co.uk to find out more about reducing, reusing and recycling in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Residents will realise savings to their weekly shopping bills which in turn will reduce the amount of unwanted food having to be collected and disposed of by the council. Its a win-win opportunity for all.” – Jan Britton, Head of Highways and Environment
Its really important for households to reduce food waste because its better for the environment but it can also save you money. Most households throw away hundreds of pounds worth of food each year – this is especially harmful because when it is sent for disposal it leads to methane emissions from landfill, which is a potent green house gas. Whilst new technologies are coming on line slowly to deal with this, in keeping with the waste hierarchy our priority must be to prevent this waste in the first place. If we can get people to make a few simple changes, the cumulative effect could be colossal”. We hope that the WRAP educational campaign will help make a real reduction in the amount of food waste generated in Shrewsbury and Atcham and across the UK.
