Thank heavens for a common sense site. It horrifies me how much good food is wasted.
Sue Worthington works and has grown up children, one of whom lives with her. Sue knew a WI member who asked her to be part of the Love Food Champions project. She has always been interested in not wasting food but thought that there was more she could do to improve.
“I was taught from a very early age you could always do something with left over food and that money could be saved by utilising every morsel. So I was the one in the group who didn’t waste food, others were wasting a lot of edible food but even for me, the sessions were helpful.”
“I learnt from the others just by discussing ideas, it’s phenomenal what you can learn from each other this way. I discovered that I could freeze things such as lemon slices, which is great for me as I buy my lemons in big packs and they were often going off. I just wouldn’t have thought of freezing them!”
“If I am using mince I always cook enough for three meals and two go in the freezer with dates written on them. I use left over meat in lunches, and if I have potatoes they are fried up for bubble and squeak.”
“I think everyone can learn a lot from discussion groups like this about what to do with leftovers and how to reduce them in the first place by just cooking less. The Love Food Hate Waste project has made me even more aware of how much money can be saved and it has brought a lot more pleasure to cooking.”
