How many double deckers could we fill up each day with the top 5 fruit & veg we throw away whole/untouched?
Sadly, we could fill 12 double decker buses with the whole apples we throw away – every day – in the UK. And the picture is just as alarming for many of the fruit and vegetables we buy.
Most of these nutritious foods get thrown out because we don’t eat them in time. So to inspire you Love Food Hate Waste, went straight into the kitchen to create some quick and easy recipes to make the most of these foods and added lots of new tips to keep our fruit & vegetables fresher for longer.
We have recently been in the research laboratories with a team of fruit & vegetables experts to see how different storage conditions effect the time it takes for these foods to go off. Sainsbury’s have joined us in this work and are now able to give their customers the best advice they can on how to store their fruit and vegetables to keep them fresher for longer- you’ll find this information at the loose fruit and vegetable aisles in all their stores, and on their website.
If its inspiration you are looking for or simply another quick tip to rescue those leftover apples and pears, please visit the recipe section where we’ve added lots of tasty new ideas. Quick and easy milkshakes and risotto have the added benefit of appealing to children and there’s very few veg that don’t add great flavour and colour to a simple Spanish Tortilla.
Love Food Hate Waste has added some more great tips to the site – here are some or our favourites:

Our recipes and tips not only help us make the most of the food we buy and save money, but crucially we are benefiting more from these nutritious foods. 5 A Day fruit & vegetables can also come tinned, dried and frozen – still nutritious, these prepared fruit & veg have a longer shelf life and are a great help for families in a hurry- I know my kids love frozen peas and tinned beans and sweetcorn.
