Everyday millions and millions of untouched fruit and vegetables end up in the bin

Instead of in our tummies……

Double decker buses represent the amount of fruit and veg thrown away every day in the UK
How many double deckers could we fill up each day with the top 5 fruit & veg we throw away whole/untouched?

Sadly, we could fill 12 double decker buses with the whole apples we throw away – every day – in the UK. And the picture is just as alarming for many of the fruit and vegetables we buy.

Most of these nutritious foods get thrown out because we don’t eat them in time. So to inspire you Love Food Hate Waste, went straight into the kitchen to create some quick and easy recipes to make the most of these foods and added lots of new tips to keep our fruit & vegetables fresher for longer.

Sainsbury’s help Love Food Hate Waste

Sainsburys supporter statement - lfhwWe have recently been in the research laboratories with a team of fruit & vegetables experts to see how different storage conditions effect the time it takes for these foods to go off. Sainsbury’s have joined us in this work and are now able to give their customers the best advice they can on how to store their fruit and vegetables to keep them fresher for longer- you’ll find this information at the loose fruit and vegetable aisles in all their stores, and on their website.

A washing line of ‘tips’ for instant practical advice

Washing Line of Tops TipsLove Food Hate Waste has added some more great tips to the site – here are some or our favourites:

 • * Store most fruit and veg in the fridge to make it last up to a fortnight longer – only pop fruit you’ll eat in the next day or so into the fruit bowl.
 • * Many of us know that its best to keep bananas separate form other fruit – but actually its also a good idea to keep older and new fruit separate – for the same reason, to avoid fresher fruit ripening too quickly.
 • * If you do buy fruit or veg in a bag or pack- leave it there in the fridge. This can also help maintain freshness.
